Apple Inc.: Apple and Autonomous
Apple Inc. unveiled on July 20, 2025 its latest technological advance - an autonomous electric vehicle.
Apple Car, its latest innovation launched onto the market with an initial price tag of $50k aimed at competing against electric vehicle (EV) makers like Tesla. Manufacturing will take place through Foxconn based in Taiwan with first deliveries expected by late 2026.
Based on my expertise and field observations, "the Apple Car marks an exciting breakthrough in combining technology with transportation." According to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc, they aim to realize their vision of an autonomous, electric, connected future through this vehicle.
Technological developments and their consequences have long been at the core of automobile innovation, with major players like Tesla Motors Inc., General Motors AG and Apple Inc. all making headway into electric vehicle (EV) technology and autonomous driving tech development. According to estimates released this month by Bloomberg Intelligence Services Group Inc, global EV sales reached $273 billion last year and are projected to hit $802 billion by 2027.
"There has been an astounding and unprecedented shift away from combustion engine vehicles to those powered by electric and autonomous technology," according to Professor of Engineering Meredith Lewis of Stanford University. This evolution in auto technology represents "one of the fastest turnarounds we've seen since we opened up automobile production."
Apple Car will reportedly feature advanced LiDAR sensors similar to those found in iPhone models for autonomous driving, enabling a three-dimensional map to be created of its surroundings, enabling it to navigate independently. Furthermore, breakthrough battery technology allowing a range of over 350 miles on one charge should also be utilized by this vehicle.
But with autonomous vehicle technology comes new concerns around data privacy; as these vehicles rely on collecting constant information to operate optimally. Such data collection could include sensitive details about where, when, and who was travelling in their car as well as conversations being had inside.
John Davis, an expert from Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said data privacy should be of primary concern when considering autonomous vehicles. Manufactures will have to ensure there are robust security measures in place in order to safeguard user data.
While privacy concerns exist regarding autonomous vehicle introduction such as Apple Car, autonomous cars like this one could bring significant transformation in urban landscape. Traffic reduction, decreased pollution levels and potential decrease in car ownership could all be outcomes from such technological revolution.
As the world prepares to make these transitional changes, it has become evident that technology and transportation represent an intriguing intersection, promising endless potential in its wake. Apple now sits firmly behind this initiative - promising an exhilarating adventure ahead.
