How to Set Up a Guest Wi-Fi Network for Visitors and Smart Devices

A guest network takes ten minutes in your router's admin page — and it's the documented way to keep visitors off your printer, your camera feeds and your file shares.

A guest network is a second Wi-Fi name on the same router, documented across every major brand, that connects devices to the internet but not to each other — visitors get online, and your laptops, printers, smart-home hubs and network storage stay invisible to them. Ten minutes to set up: router admin page (usually 192.168.0.1 or the maker's app) → Guest Network → name it, password it, enable client isolation. The catch: the best use isn't visitors — it's smart-home gadgets, the least-trusted devices most homes own.

Why put smart devices on guest Wi-Fi?

Every security agency's smart-home guidance documents the same architecture: untrusted devices (cameras, bulbs, plugs, TVs) get their own network segment so a compromised gadget can't reach your computers. A guest network is the consumer version of that segmentation — cameras can phone their clouds, but they can't scan your laptop's shared folders. The setup steps
